Young Women’s Initiative Graduation
May 30 at 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
The Women’s Fund of Western MA proudly presents the graduation ceremony of the very first cohort of our Young Women’s Inititative (YWI)!
Please join us on Wednesday, May 30th at The Renaissance School in Springfield to hear from the 17 graduates as they present their final philanthropy projects and recommendations for increasing prosperity for youth in Springfield and western Massachusetts. The program begins at 6:00 pm.
Launched in the fall of 2017, the YWI accepted the first cohort of self-motivated young women from Springfield between the ages of 12 and 24 to participate in a nine-month program that assisted them in identifying challenges that young women face in the community and giving them the skills to advocate for solutions.
The young women attended classes twice a month and identified four key areas they believe need attention in Springfield. Their final project, which they will present at graduation, consisted of creating four mini-grants for local nonprofits addressing mental health; rape culture; women’s leadership; and economic challenges in Springfield.
The keynote speaker at graduation will be Kalisha Dessources, Director of the National Philanthropic Collaborative of Young Women’s Initiative and former Policy Advisor to the Obama White House Council on Women and Girls. A dance performance by Stadium Dance of Springfield will highlight area youth.
Special guests include Senator Eric P. Lesser and staff from Representative Jose F. Todado’s office and the City of Springfield.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and reservations are encouraged.
